Frequently asked questions

Stitch Your Story with Sue Stone

"When does the course start? And what's the course schedule?"

Once you register you’ll get an email receipt for your purchase, followed by another email with the course curriculum and a list of essential tools and materials.

Registration closes on Friday 30th October 2020 at 11:59pm (UK time) and the course starts on Monday 2nd November 2020 at 10am (UK time). On that day we’ll send you another email with a link to the members area plus your username and password so you can get in there and get started.

In the members area you'll find the Introductory Module and all of Module One. Then every week for the next three weeks we'll release the next module along with some bonus material. So within four weeks you'll have access to everything including all the videos, resources and bonus material.

You have lifetime access to the members area and all the course materials so you can work through the course at your own pace and on your own schedule.

Inside the members area are three suggested schedules (in case you like a timetable) but you're under no obligation to follow these.

"Who am I buying from? Who are TextileArtist.org?"

In case you’re new to the TextileArtist.org community, we’re the sons of Sue Stone – Joe and Sam Pitcher. We started TextileArtist.org back in 2012 because we were so inspired by the breath-taking work being created by our mum and her friends from the 62 Group of Textile Artists.

Since then we’ve built a community of over 60,000 brilliantly creative and passionate people who get our weekly newsletter and ‘like’ our Facebook page. We’ve also interviewed over 500 textile and fiber artists on the site, released five ebooks, and published hundreds of articles exploring the wonderful world of textile art.

And creating this online course with our mum is our most ambitious endeavour yet. It’s truly been a labour of love and we’re so excited to share it with you!

"I’ve never taken an online course and I’m a bit of a techno-phobe!"

It doesn’t matter how technically-minded you are (or not), this course is inclusive. In creating the members area, we’ve made sure every element is straightforward and simple to navigate. If you have any issues though, we’ll hop on a phone call with you to sort them out as soon we can. You won’t be alone.

"Aren’t online courses a bit impersonal? Nothing beats the experience of being in the room with the artist and the other students."

That’s true in some ways. You won’t be in the same room as your tutor or classmates. But you will have access to them through the exclusive Facebook community so you can post your work and share ideas. Plus, the live webinar with Sue gives you a chance to get honest, constructive feedback on your work.

And online learning actually has lots of advantages.

  • You can fit TextileArtist.org’s course entirely to your own schedule because you can log in to the member’s area and do a class whenever you like.
  • With over 30 videos, an abundance of supporting materials and some amazing bonuses, the opportunity is there to go much deeper than in person.
  • And you won’t have any extra costs for things like travel and accommodation because you’ll be doing the course from the comfort of your own home.

"I think the course sounds amazing but I just don’t think I have the time to commit."

We understand you have a busy life. But if you’ve been beating yourself up for not committing to a creative practice, now’s your chance. And it is possible to do the course in just 1-hour every week if that’s all you can spare.

Plus, you’ll have access to the course materials for life so you don’t need to feel any pressure.

If you do need a bit of motivation though, we’ll keep you on track with email encouragement and in the private Facebook community.

"I like the idea of being inspired and influenced by an artist like Sue Stone but I don’t want to copy. I want to develop my own visual identity."

Perfect. You won’t be copying ever!

Sue will give you clear guidelines for experimentation in each class but the emphasis is always on making discoveries for yourself. There’s enough flexibility for each individual student to produce something entirely personal in response to every single class.

"What is the refund policy on Stitch Your Story?"

We are determined to make Stitch Your Story with Sue Stone a really positive experience for all students. We also want you to be confident when purchasing the course. So if you feel you're not becoming more inventive with simple techniques and developing a personal visual vocabulary, we'll happily give you your money back within the first 30 days after you get access to the member's area.

We do ask that you show us you've done the work involved in Module 1 and Module 2 before we give you a refund though. After all, how will you know if the course is working unless you give it your best shot first?

You can read the course terms and conditions (including a full refund policy here)

"OK. I’d love to learn how to be more inventive with basic textile techniques, build my own visual vocabulary and commit to regular manageable bursts of creativity BUT $507 USD is a lot of money!"

It’s true – this isn’t a cheap course. And yes, you can do a throwaway embroidery class online at very little cost.

But the number of people who complete those cheap online classes is shockingly low (under 5%). Whereas if you make an investment in yourself and your textile education, you’re far more likely to do the work.

With those quick-fix courses you don’t get anywhere near the detail of teaching that Sue will give in Stitch Your Story. You won’t just be following along copying someone else’s design. You’ll be developing as an artist in your own right, building a personal visual vocabulary through experimentation.

And, because the course runs over several classes, you’ll be honing a creative habit along the way.

Look at it this way. If you choose to go with the option to pay in monthly instalments over twelve-months, it works out at around only $1.39 USD per day! And that’s it – you don’t need to spend more money on fancy supplies or materials – just a selection of threads and fabrics and you’re good to go!

Can I do the course if I'm not in the US? And how much does it cost in my local currency?

Absolutely! The great thing about online courses is that they're accessible all over the world. We've had students on Stitch Your Story from Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
